Sheffield industry and steelmaking history museum with interactive galleries and on-site craftsmen.

Located in one of the city’s oldest industrial districts, the museum stands on a man-made island over 900 years old.

Kelham Island Museum was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield’s industrial story.

Our interactive galleries tell the story from light trades and skilled workmanship to mass production and what it was like to live and work in Sheffield during the Industrial Revolution.

Follow the growth of the steel city through the Victorian Era and two world wars to see how steelmaking forged both the city of today and the world!

Under this scheme visitors are offered a choice of Standard or Gift Aid admission. Gift Aid admission includes a 10 per cent voluntary donation. Gift Aid admissions enable Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust to reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to Museum funds. Museum Shop 

Our museum shop sells a variety of Sheffield, Made gifts from pewter-ware and handcrafted tools and knives to local history books, toys and jewellery.

Melting Shop Play Area

The Melting Shop Play Area is open during normal museum opening time and is suitable for children aged 2-9 years. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Height restrictions apply.

Mobility Impairment

The museum is located at Kelham Island on Alma Street, Sheffield S3 8RY which is approximately 500 metres from Shalesmoor Supertram stop.

There are 3 marked blue badge wheelchair accessible parking bays at the museum alongside more than 20 other public parking spaces and overflow carpark.

The museum is surrounded by traditional cobbled paving, but a firm and level footpath has been installed over the cobbles from the main gate. This path conveniently links the the car park to the main museum building, Brearley Room, Millowners Arms, accessible toilets and the Steam Hammer Cafe.

There are automatic doors to the main building, Millowners Arms, Stone Garden and Crucible Shop. There is level or ramped access throughout the museum. Stairs and lifts are provided to all three floors.

Many of the exhibits are on open display. You can touch objects that are large and robust quite safely – these are clearly marked.
